Okay, maybe that’s not what was said exactly, but Activision CEO and 1997 East Albuquerque Swing Dancing Champion Bobby Kotick* has let it be known that Electronic Arts loves the taste of souls. Sweet, delicious souls.
Speaking to Conde Nast Portfolio, Kotick explained how Activision has grown, and how they have done so differently from Electronic Arts. Note the bold:
It’s about really being considerate of the culture in the game studios that Activision buys. That’s the biggest difference between us and any of our competitors. We built a model that celebrates entrepreneurial, opportunistic, independent values. It’s almost the opposite of Electronic Arts, which has commoditized development. It did a very good job of taking the soul out of a lot of the studios it acquired.
I have to agree with the man. Sure, Neversoft cranks out a new Tony Hawk game every year, and Treyarch has its hand shoved so far and firm up the ass of Spider-Man that they can stroke Spidey’s spleen, but they don’t assimilate developers like the EA collective.
