About a week ago, just about every video game website, and even a couple of tech shows reported that computer manufacturer Acer had mades its intentions to produce a video game console very clear. The industry was buzzing over the news, while fanboys were quick to attack Acer for daring to attempt to thrwart any of the three console makers.
Well, as things tend to turn out in this business, the whole story was a giant screw up. You see, someone twisted the comments of Acer’s senior vice president James T. Wong, who did make it clear that Acer wanted a slice of the gaming market. However, he was not referring to any kind of console — he was speaking of Acer’s plans to develop a high-end PC (ala Alienware, Falcon Northwest) targeted at serious PC gamers.
If you needed any more proof that PC gaming is on the outs, here you go. A major player in the home computer market makes mention of how they want to target gamers, and rather than going with the logical, seemingly braindead answer of “Oh, they’re going to develop a gaming PC”, everyone assumes that Acer is getting into the home console market. For shame, people.
For shame.
