AC/DC Rock Band Tracks Will Shake Walmart All Night Long (Exclusively)

Damn that was a long title that didn’t work out as well as it could have (I mean, I am forced to somehow work the title of an AC/DC song into the title of this post, it is just cheap good journalism).

In a way that is similar to Guitar Hero: Aerosmith but just different enough it just might work. AC/DC Rock Band Track Pack (Nov 2nd for 360/PS3/PS2 and Nov 16th for Wii), however to Walmart (and Sams Club) only. The tracks picked are as follows:

Unlike DLC track packs like The Who or Pixies, where you have the convenience of downloading them at your leisure in your home, the AC/DC songs will have you taking a trip to Walmart (or WalMart.com if they allow). With Mtv and Walmart knowing they are not in every single city, they are “exploring the idea” of setting up shops in those areas.

From the very start, I was not really so “for” this idea, and the next piece of information on the game/tracks also adds to this. On the official AC/DC site, the press release reads:

Pricing for AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band Track Pack on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii is $ 39.88 and $ 29.88 for the PlayStation 2.

Forty fucking dollars for 18 songs that are live, not even studio versions. Now before I heard the price, I had questions of whether this will be just a box with a download code inside or would this be a disc that would transfer the tracks to your hard drive (in which case, go in with a few people on buying it, then it is worth it). I don’t think I’m going out on a limb here saying that however they do work the songs out to get on your hard drive… they better be able to get on the hard drive! If disc-swapping is going to be a requirement to just play the three AC/DC songs I actually like, forget it.

This seems as though it was a rushed product or idea to ensure people continue to talk about Rock Band as it is released on the other systems because of the timed 360 deal. I guess using Walmart to whore your product is not as bad (or better though) than seeing Guitar Hero: World Tour box art photocopied ad on the front of every 7-Eleven door (the only place that makes pre-ordering a game at GameStop seem like a better option). Now let us all pray that this whole Walmart deal is a timed exclusive one, and the tracks will be offered through DLC just as God intended.

  1. From what I can tell, it was more of a decision by AC/DC and/or EA/MTV rather than Harmonix. AC/DC is known to be stingy about downloading stuff. (See ITunes)Also, I think they have some kind of marketing deal where they whore themselves to Wal-Mart. Anyways, the 40 bucks for 18 songs arguement is valid in a sense, but technically they’re only overpriced by about 22 cents, if you were to purchase them all as DLC singles. It sounds a lot nicer as 3200 microsoft points, but it still seems a hefty price… considering Blood Sex Sugar Magik, which was just released, was only 1600 as a DLC Pack (The singles were 160 each, raising the price quite a bit if you were to buy each song individually.) I’m probably going to get this a bit after the price drops. But everything is transferrable for play in Rock Band 1/2, just for clarification.

    1. Transferable aye..thanks Rex, cool to know that I can head to Walmart, buy it, transfer onto my hard drive, and then return the disc ;)

I’m kidding about that, I like AC/DC, but wouldn’t want that much of them on my hard drive, plus, I would feel bad for the person who would get that returned copy from Walmart to find the code to transfer had been used. In all reality though, I wonder how they are going to handle the people that ARE going to be doing that, as no doubts, with Walmart’s “we take back anything” return policy.

Trying to stay positive about the news, it is good in a way that AC/DC, who after some quick research, do seem to be scared natives about this whole digital age of music. I wonder how many other bands would sign on to make their music available to Rock Band / Guitar Hero players if they got the AC/DC treatment (ie little pricier, but comes in it’s own physical package instead of just being a download).
