79% of UK handheld gamers play DS, 45% play Wii

I have a working theory that Nintendo is plotting a coup of major world leaders to institute themselves as joint “Emperors of Earth”. My theory states that Nintendo will use its Wii and DS gaming platforms to beam a mind-control carrier wave directly into all of our brains that, when signaled by Nintendo HQ (which, according to my theory, is on the moon of Triton), will send the human population into a massive stampede on all of our political establishments, overthrowing the established political leaders and naming Kid Icarus our new God.

…until this theory comes to fruition, we’ll just have to take solace in the fact that Nintendo owns a 79% share of the handheld market in the UK. 79%. That means 3 out of every 4 handheld gamers in the UK own a DS. That is freaking astonishing. What is more impressive is that according to Nintendo, the Wii has a 45% market share in the home console market in the UK, despite the fact that the Wii continues to have the weakest third-party support of any of the three consoles.

I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if the numbers from the US wind up being similar to those in the UK. Stateside it is still damn near impossible to find a Wii, and around Christmas finding a DS even became somewhat of a chore.

I’m tellin’ ya, man… they’re gonna take over…
